The tale goes something like this…

In 480 BC, before the Battle of Thermopylae, the Spartan known only as Dienekes was told that Persian archers would launch a mass of arrows so thick that they would literally blot out the sun. His reply, "Good. We shall fight in the shade."

Despite the threatening hordes before them, the Spartans sent the rest of the Greek army home and stepped forward to to face the largest army ever assembled. It was in this unforgiving forge of battle that the Spartan ethos took shape—hard work and pride, tempered with a stoic sense of duty. No retreat. No surrender. Not while Greece was imperiled. Not if Lakonia was in danger. They would fight to the end.

So, what does this possibly have to do with Lakonic besides, maybe, explaining the Hellenistic spelling of our name?

Lakonic, founded in 2000 by a Chicagoan known only as Merrick, used these Spartan principals as the cornerstone for creating a new breed of digital agency. Our name, our model, our duty (which, coincidentally, is the name of our primary typeface) and our existence all share the Spartan fervor and tenacity: To fight for the greater future, not to be lionized throughout the annals of history.
